IMRIC has teamed up senior scientist Dr. Andres Luzano of Toronto Western Hospital with IMRIC researcher Prof. Hagai Bergman, a pioneer in the development of treatment for Parkinson's and other movement disorders. 

Dr. Lozano's group is a world leader in the studies of deep brain stimulation (DBS), a procedure that involves implanting a "brain pacemaker," which sends electrical impulses to specific parts of the brain to control involuntary tremors in human patients. Prof. Bergman's IMRIC group in Jerusalem is leading the research on primate models of Parkinson's, depression, and schizophrenia, as well as advanced physiological studies of human patients undergoing DBS procedures for Parkinson's and major depression. 
 

This IMRIC collaboration is enabling us to explore techniques used today to treat Parkinson's, with the hope of finding ways to prevent the disease from occurring.
