Diabetes occurs when beta cells in the pancreas produce insufficient insulin. Dr. Shapiro, a leading figure in the clinical treatment of diabetes, designed the Edmonton Protocol for transplanting insulin-producing beta cells into the pancreas of a diabetes sufferer. Prof. Dor's research at IMRIC determined that by eliminating a specific gene, called LKB1, from the beta cell, we can increase production and secretion of more insulin.

This IMRIC collaboration could pave the way for radical new diabetes treatment.
